Background:
Older people attend the emergency department (ED) at increasing rates and are at risk of poor outcome. Besides the higher vulnerability of older patients associated with poor outcome, little is known about the association of routinely collected clinical parameters at presentation and risk of mortality in the period after ED presentation.

Methods:
We conducted a retrospective follow-up study at the ED of the Leiden University Medical Center in 2012. Patients aged 70 years or older were included. Determinants were age, gender, time of the ED visit, way of arrival, triage category, consulting medical specialty, performed blood tests and the number of clinical measurements taken. Outcome measurement was mortality within 90 days after the investigated ED visit. Cox regression analyses were performed to analyse the association.
